Introduction

Hey this is Matias Rengel with GuitarControl.com and today you’re gonna be learning this awesome song by the Arctic Monkeys. It’s called Do I Want To Know? It has a really cool riff that we’re going to be exploring in this lesson. So make sure you download the tab, which is down below in the link and let’s get down to it.

G Minor Scale

Alright so we’re going to be exploring the verse and the pre-chorus of this awesome song and for the first part and most of the song you’re going to be using the G minor scale. For those of you who don’t know that minor scale, it’s very simple, if you start on G, you just go G, A, B flat, C, D, E flat, F and G.

Do I Wanna Know – Part 1

So now for the first part that was playing it starts like this… super simple. You’re going to position your index finger on the first fret of the sixth string and you’re going to come around to this third fret of the sixth string like this… and now right after you’re gonna place your index finger on the first fret of the fifth string and you’re gonna play that so you hammer-on to the third fret of the sixth string, you are supposed to remove the index, it is important to not lift your finger suddenly and because you wanna lift it and bring it closer.

Now we’re doing a hammer-on from the first and fifth and then play once again the third fret of the sixth string, so just practice that. Now right after that we’re going to go to the next part.

Do I Wanna Know – Part 2

That is going to go a little bit like this… so we’re actually repeating a little bit of it, so instead of doing the first time that you play this riff, you go and then you repeat that. What gets repeated is the first, the third and the third and then you do that again, but this time you go to the fourth string and you play the first fret on the 3rd fret; so you play first fret on the 4th string and then you hammer-on to the 3rd fret and then from the third fret you play once again the first fret…

Now from there we’re gonna take our index finger to the third fret of the fifth string and you’re going to slide up to the fifth, so you stay up to the fifth from the third to the fifth of the fifth string so then you go back to the third of the fifth string… so pretty cool right? So right after that we’re gonna go into the first fret of the fifth string and you’re gonna do this… so for that you wanna play the first fret of the fifth string, the 3rd fret of the fifth string and the open fourth and then at the end back to the fifth string third fret, open forth and third fret of the fifth string… So for the end of that part you’re gonna do this… so what’s happening right there is you’re playing the first fret of the fifth string, the 3rd fret of the fifth string and then from there you move the index finger and you remove this ring finger and you do come around from the third to fifth like this… this has to be fast and then you do that twice.

So I would say the only hard part of this is to play and you repeat that a bunch of times throughout the third verse and then we go into the chorus, which is going to be really fun.

The Chords

For the chords we do this… so let’s check it out. So I’m going to the tenth fret of the fifth string and you slide down to six and then you go to the fifth string; you go three, five, six, five and three. So then we do this part again, which is 1st, 3rd, open fourth back to the fifth string on the third fret… and then you go back here which is the beginning.

Practice Technique

It is a super simple riff and it’s very easy to play it and it sounds really cool. now you gotta practice two techniques. I think in this one of the first techniques is to practice sliding and the other one is to practice finger changing, which is super important to do something like this right. So for that I will recommend that you try to practice, put your index finger on the first fret and then put your ring finger on the third fret, play both notes and then practice with this C.

So what you’re doing is you played the third fret and then you bring down the index and you remove the ring and you play it again and you put the index on the fifth, practice the entire skill like that, very useful actually.

Another technique that I want you to practice is this one… I want you to practice that and try to play it faster, eventually, you will get there, but you’re gonna start slow.

Conclusion

That’s it, I hope you’ve enjoyed this lesson, it’s a really cool song and as usual don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel for daily guitar lessons and there’s a link in the description to download the tab. You can rewatch the video and follow it with the tab, it’s a really cool song.
