Introduction To Hurt By Johnny Cash

Hey how’s it going? This is John MacLennan and I hope you’re doing fantastic and welcome to this video lesson. I’m here today with GuitarControl.com and we’re looking at a song called Hurt as recorded by Johnny Cash, but originally by the Nine Inch Nails. It’s a really cool song and it’s got a great acoustic part to it.

All right well let’s zoom in and break it down.

Hurt Chords

The main pattern in this song just uses three chords; an A minor, a C and a D. The first chord, A minor is gonna be played from the fifth string down, open fifth string and second fret on the fourth string, second fret on the third-string and first fret on the second string open first string. So most people play it like this, I use two fingers but it’s that same chord.

Then we’re going to move to a C chord, again I’m only gonna play from the fifth string down and this is going to be third fret on the 5th string, 2nd fret on the 4th string, open on the 3rd string, 1st fret on the 2nd string and open on the 1st string. Then Dadd 9 is our next chord and on this chord I’m only gonna play from the fourth string down starting with this note D, which is open fourth string, then I’m gonna play second fret, third fret and open so 2nd fret on the third string, third fret on the second string and open first string. So here’s the sound of all three of those chords…
