Introduction

Hey everybody how’s it going? This is Darrin from GuitarControl.com bringing you this video lesson. Today I want to teach you the intro to Savior by the Black Veil Brides. This is a really cool song and little thing you can play on your acoustic. It’s not too terribly hard and sounds really good and is fun to play and is a good exercise for if you’re getting into finger-picking. So be sure to click on the link in the description for the tabs and let’s get close up and take a look.

Saviour Chords

All right so these chords aren’t like your typical chords you already know per se; they’re a little different, there are a lot of open strings in this, so let’s just look at these shapes. So for this very first one we’re gonna play the seventh fret of the fifth string with your fourth finger and we’re gonna play the fourth fret of the fourth string with your first finger and then the second and third string are played open. So I’m going to go with my thumb and I’m gonna play the fifth string and then the third string will be my second finger and the fourth string will be my first finger, back to the third string and then second string will be my first finger; we’ll get close up and take a look at the right hand in just a moment. So we have… that’s the first measure… So five, three, four, three, two, three, four and three, I’m referring to the strings. Then going to the second measure we go; five, three, four, three and now we have a change. So the note on the fifth string is going to move from the seventh fret to the fifth fret and I just use my second finger to do that and now basically now we just do that same thing, we just did five, three, four, three. So the second measure now that bass note on the fifth string is going to move to the third fret, so your first finger is going to be on the third fret of the fifth string and then your second finger is gonna be getting that fourth fret of the fourth string and now we’re 6 3 4 3 2 3 4 3; so the first three measures… Now the fourth measure we’re just gonna walk back up so our bass note is still on the third fret of the fifth string; so now we’re just gonna move back up so our second finger will go to the fifth fret of the fifth string and our first finger will go back to the fourth fret of the fourth string and then that whole section repeats four times. So it’s four measures in total, so the whole thing… and then repeat… All right and then following that we have just two more measures, so we’re on that very first shape; so seventh fret of the fifth string with your fourth finger, fourth fret of the fourth string with your first finger and we are going 5 3 4 3 2 3 4 3 and again that repeats so, that’s a total of four times… And then from there it goes off into the verse and I believe starts off kind of the same way, but we’re just working with this intro for this lesson. So now let’s take a look at our right hand, our picking hand.

Saviour Picking Pattern

Alright so again we’re doing that chord, we’re on the seventh fret of the fifth string with our fourth finger, fourth fret of the fourth string with our first finger and now our thumb is going to be playing five, our second finger is going to be playing three, our first finger is going to be playing four and our third finger is going to be playing two… and it stays that way through the whole thing. So those are always the strings, your thumb will always be playing five, your second finger will always playing the third string, your first finger will always be playing the fourth string and your third finger will obviously playing the second string for this. Now you can play this with a guitar pick instead of fingers and if you wanted to do it with the guitar pick it’d be a down stroke on the fifth string and then an up stroke on the third string, down on four; so down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up. Now personally I feel that it’s easier to play this with your fingers instead of the guitar pick, but it could also just be that I haven’t had too much practice with the pick, I’ve been primarily playing it with my fingers, so to me that’s a little bit easier, but either way sounds cool. Just judging by the tone of the original song I believe that they are actually using a guitar pick, but I’m not one hundred percent sure on that, they could be using their fingers for all I know.

Conclusion

All right well I hope you enjoyed that and you got something out of it.
