Californication Chords & Intro

Alright to start off with we have A minor, just the basic A minor chord that hopefully you already know and we are actually going to do a suspended two and then go to A minor but just to simplify it put your fingers on the shape for an A minor and then remove your first finger and you’re gonna pick strings 5 and 4 and then 2 and then 2 again but then you’re gonna put your first finger back on… Then from there we switch to an F but in this case you just do an F5 power chord; so first finger on the first fret of the sixth string, third finger third fret of the fifth string and then you’re gonna go six five and then the third string open and then you’re gonna take your second finger and fret the second fret of the third. So that’s the basic riff for the intro and a lot of the verse. So for the intro it does that sequence twice and then it has a repeat, so you make the change from A minor to F and back a total of four times… and then you just simply repeat those four measures.

Verse

So then moving on into the verse for How To Play Californication By Red Hot Chilli Peppers we have four measures of that same thing again and then we go to A/C and at this time you’re going to want to strum the fourth and the third string together followed by the third first and second to a G6 and five together for two three and then F, we’re gonna do full-on F barre chord, six and five together for two three and then D minor. So the D minor barre chord, so we’re all the way up to the fifth fret, all the way across the second fret on the sixth fret of the second string, third finger on the seventh fret of the fourth and fourth finger on the seventh fret of the third and when you go to that you just do five four and then three and two together; so that last sequence of the verse… then from there we move on to the bridge.

Bridge

Now the bridge for How To Play Californication By Red Hot Chilli Peppers is a strumming part. We have the chords; A minor and F major seven. So if you just take your regular F chord that you normally do; third fret of the fourth string, second fret of the third string and then first fret of the second string. Normally you’d barre across and get the first string as well, but in this case that first string is open. So that sequences is repeated a total of six times and the counting and strumming for this is you start off with an eighth note and then three sixteenth notes and then an eighth note and then three sixteenth notes and the two eighth notes. So if you strum it down down up down down… Then from there it moves on to the first chorus.

Chorus

So for the chorus for How To Play Californication By Red Hot Chilli Peppers we’re on C and its two sixteenth notes, an eighth note and then a quarter note; so it’s down up down down and then you switch to a G and do the same thing and then D minor same thing and then a minor to the G and then D minor and it’s a whole note…
