Acoustic Guitar Lessons for New Musicians

Starting out on an acoustic guitar is a great way to learn music basics. Playing it is great for learning how to read music, understanding chords and scales, and for practicing rhythm. Below are some acoustic guitar lessons to get you started making music.

Reading Music
Learning to read music is fun when you’re learning it on an acoustic guitar. All you’ll need to get started is a beginner’s music book, which usually includes exercises to learn to read, explanations of music symbols, and chord charts, which are pretty much everything a beginner might need to know! The exercises will show you the notes on each string, and after you’ve mastered one string, they will move on to the next. It’s best to start slow like that and make sure you have a good handle on the notes, because it will provide you with a good foundation.

Chords and Scales
Another great acoustic guitar lesson involves chords and scales, two things that are going to make your future as an acoustic guitar player a lot brighter. Use your music book to find chord charts, and practice switching between chords. It will take some time and practice to get fluent at that, but it’s worth it. Besides chords, you’ll also need to invest some time in learning scales, but an acoustic guitar is perfect for that because once you learn one pattern, you can play it almost anywhere else on the guitar. Scales are important for when you want to write songs, or for when you solo, so they are worth the effort.

Rhythm
Probably one of the most important acoustic guitar lessons you can learn is about rhythm, which is an essential component to any type of song or music. The reason why guitars are great for this is because you can strum on them. To get started, just pick up your acoustic guitar and strum down on it four times, making sure to stay in a steady rhythm. If you can do it four times in a row, practice playing it for longer. Once you’ve mastered that, it’s time to tackle other strumming patterns, such as alternating strumming both up and down, and with a pick and with your thumb. Doing this repeatedly and practicing with a metronome is one of the most important lessons you can learn, since rhythm in music is everything.
